As of the start of the college year,  I have been studying music technology, a field within the subject of music that is completely new to me. In addition to this, I have been placed in an environment i have never worked in before – a recording studio. Alongside this new environment, I have been presented with a wide range of recording equipment with which I am inexperienced and have very little knowledge about.

The assignment I have recently been given as part of my course is to create a small, high quality album of up to three songs. Because of this, i am going to familiarise myself and gain experience with all of the recording equipment i have been given via experimentation. I am going to produce recordings of a range of instruments using a variety of microphones and recording techniques, microphone positioning and recording equipment to gain a comprehensive list of what combination of these thing will give the highest quality recording for each instrument i will be recording. By doing this, i will gain confidence and competence in setting up the equipment in the studio and an understanding of in which situations to use different microphones, techniques, positioning and other recording equipment in order to ensure the highest quality recording is produced that meets a given brief.

The instruments I am going to experiment with recording are:

  • Acoustic Guitar
  • Drums
  • Piano
  • Vocals
